Six Nation Hospitality – Six Nation Rugby Hospitality – Six Nation Hospitality 2011
Carolyn Hitt: ‘What might have been’ moments for Wales in 2009/10
AND so, the end is near. A long, arduous and, at times, deeply frustrating season for Wales has been framed by encounters with New Zealand. It began last November with a creditable effort against the All Blacks in Cardiff and will finish tomorrow with the aim of a pride-salvaging performance in Hamilton. Seven months and 12,000 miles separate those matches, but how far have Gatland’s Wales really come? While regional rugby travelled towards the respective peaks of European and Celtic League silverware for the Blues and Ospreys, Wales’s journey had that all too familiar two-steps-forwards, one-step-back feel. Rugby had its fair share of front-page as well as back-page coverage too. Alfie came out, Mike Phillips stepped out (with Duffy) and Gavin Henson is still out (without Charlotte). Not forgetting Andy Powell who was temporarily kicked out (Buggy-Gate).
Wales ‘have to earn respect in NZ’
WARREN GATLAND has thrown down the gauntlet to his Wales team ahead of tomorrow’s second Test by declaring Grand Slams and European club success don’t mean a thing in New Zealand. The majority of Gatland’s players are Grand Slam winners, while the coach himself won numerous trophies with Wasps before scooping that 2008 Six Nations title. But, as he looks ahead to this weekend’s rematch in his home town of Hamilton, Gatland says northern hemisphere triumphs count for little in this rugby-mad land. “The thing about New Zealand is that whatever you achieve outside this country, unless you perform here you doesn’t earn the respect of the New Zealand public, fans or media,” said Wales’ Kiwi coach.
FGW said it “quite often” diverted trains to cope with demand for special events and that it had previously added more trains to its service to south Wales during the Six Nations rugby competition.
It added there will be another train within 30 minutes of most cancellations.”We publicised the alterations to services well in advance through many channels,” said a FGW spokesperson.”There will be another train within 30 minutes of most cancelled services and we would advise people to check their trains before they travel.”We put on a number of extra services to accommodate customers travelling to and from the Six Nations in Cardiff earlier this year.”There was further disruption to services between London Paddington and south Wales on Wednesday after signalling equipment was vandalised. One late victory doesn’t make a summer – but it will have to do So, while the England manager could just about bring himself to admit that last weekend’s one-point win over Australia – the first significant victory in his 23-match reign – was “pretty special”, he was at pains to highlight the need for still more improvement. And, even though England displayed an imagination, incisiveness and ruthlessness that were largely missing from the previous week’s defeat in Perth, the old puritan was determined not to get carried away.
“There’s a lot of stuff spoken about flair and imagination and all those romantic things you guys like to talk about,” Johnson warned the media “but it’s about pressure.”There’s no doubt that Johnson himself was under huge pressure. Hailed as a Messiah when parachuted into the hot seat in place of the shoddily treated Brian Ashton, Johnson had failed to deliver in the Six Nations and before Saturday hadn’t managed a single win over any of the southern hemisphere big three of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. There is no doubt his coaches were under pressure. They had been in position even longer than Johnson and, although they exceeded expectations in guiding England to the World Cup final in 2007, had presided over more false dawns than consistent victories. There is no doubt the players were under pressure. Very few could be said to have transposed club form to the international arena. Most were bemused as well as embarrassed. They were all aware that a 32-man playing squad for next season was about to be announced and that exclusion from it would be a hammer blow to their chances of making the World Cup next autumn. According to scrummage coach Graeme Rowntree, many of them were shamed into turning the tables on Australia. It would be easy to conclude therefore that Johnson’s England thrive on pressure – either self-inflicted or applied from outside. When the chips were down, they delivered and that, surely, can only be a good thing – both now, and in the testing times ahead?
Actually, no. All England did on Saturday was relieve the pressure, for a while.
Victory, heartening as it was, might not, in the context of the development of this bunch of players be too little, but in the context of this season it was definitely too late.Just as they had managed against France in the last game of the Six Nations championship so, in the last game of the season, did they manage to produce something to warm the heart.
